The only sound in the darkened mine tunnel is water dripping off limestone walls. A lone injured miner lay motionless on the gravel floor. Five lights pierce the darkness as muffled voices announce the arrival of the rescue team.

Tonya Huskey has always been interested in lifelong learning, so working in continuing education at Missouri S&T was a great career fit. The opportunity to pursue her MBA from S&T, however, was “the perfect fit for me,” she says.

It’s no surprise that Marquia Lewis decided to study computer science in college. “I was around computers all the time growing up, and I really like them,” says Lewis, a junior whose mother, a software engineer for The Boeing Co. in St. Louis, also majored in computer science.

Kayla Billadeau has always had a bit of a “can-do” kind of personality, even before becoming salutatorian of her high school’s graduating class. But Billadeau has kept it up throughout her time at Missouri S&T, completing five internships at companies like ConocoPhillips and The Disney Co. When she graduates this year, the mechanical engineering major will join her sister in becoming first-generation college graduates.

Ahlam Issa isn’t the kind of person who lets opportunities slip by. Born in Tanzania, Issa left the country at the tender age of 10 years old to live in St. Louis. She didn’t speak any English when she arrived but overcame that and other obstacles to graduate as valedictorian from Hazelwood East High School.

He is passionate about proving the effectiveness, sustainability and economic efficiency of using restored wetlands for water quality management and flood control. He believes wetlands are the answer because they’re good for conservation and the economy alike.

Missouri murals come alive in HD

Using tempera paint, muralist Thomas Hart Benton told the story of Missouri’s history on the walls of the House Lounge in the Missouri state capitol building. Missouri S&T’s Jim Bogan brought the mural, and its creator, to life in his video Tom Benton’s Missouri. This fall, the film was re-mastered in high definition and re-released to mark its 20th anniversary.
