William Schonberg says academia is cool because you usually get to research what you’re really curious about. As chair of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T, Schonberg, when he has time, likes to study high-speed impacts — specifically, those that could be caused by space debris.

Where rice may not be so nice

Eric Farrow wants to make sure the rice that ends up on your plate is toxin-free. Farrow, a Missouri S&T graduate student in environmental engineering, is working with Dr. Jianmin Wang, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, to find ways to reduce the arsenic content in rice.

When Aimee Snell graduates, she wants to design roller coasters. For now, the senior at Missouri S&T is concentrating on earning her mechanical engineering degree. But she also finds time to be president of the university’s Ballet Club.

On Homecoming, Oct. 8, the Missouri S&T Miner football team will take the field for a game for the 1,000th time. (The game begins at 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.) During this era of Miner football — which dates back to the first game in 1893 — fans have witnessed many memorable moments.

As a junior, Pat McNamee and teammate Spencer Brinkmeyer became the first players in the history of the men’s soccer program at Missouri S&T to earn All-America honors. A goalie, McNamee helped the Miners record 11 shutouts during the 2010 season, earning the GLVC’s defensive player of the year honor. The Miners reached the championship game of the NCAA Midwest Regional. Here is a Q&A with McNamee:
